Tipping Point High School Company

dance leap

Tipping Point Company (TPC) is for advanced high school dancers interested in additional technical training, creative expansion and performing experiences. Company members are exposed to multiple dance genres and a variety of professional guest artists: dancers, choreographers and university professors. TPC performs several times throughout the year, culminating in a showcase featuring the dancers’ own choreography. Participation is by audition only.

All dancers entering 9th – 12th grade are eligible to audition for TPC. Auditions occur each year in the spring.

Company members must be available for the summer intensive August 8 – 12 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Classes include technique, improvisation/composition, and the creation of a new company piece that will be performed throughout the year. This workshop also fulfills the CDT summer requirement.

During the year, TPC meets for class and rehearsal every Wednesday from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. and every other Saturday from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Additional rehearsals are scheduled surrounding performances.

Fall Session: August 24 – December 7, 2016
Spring Session: January 4 – May 20, 2017

Dancers must attend every class, rehearsal and performance. A detailed schedule is provided at the beginning of the year so that dancers can plan ahead for any conflicts. Multiple missed classes will result in being pulled from the related choreography.

Company members are expected to take an active role in their own technical development. In order to keep up with the pace and level of choreography, and to grow as a versatile performer, all dancers are highly encouraged to enroll in a weekly ballet class. The Tanner Dance fall class schedule is available online at tannerdance.utah.edu.

TPC will participate in the following workshops:

The University of Utah’s High School Workshop offers master classes from the dance professors, a preview of Performing Dance Company’s fall performance, an opportunity to perform, and a great way to network for those interested in dancing at the university level.

The Utah Dance Festival hosted by the Utah Dance Education Organization (UDEO) includes a full day of master classes and performances, and an opportunity for the dancers to have their own choreography professionally adjudicated.

TPC members have the added option of attending a company tour to San Francisco. Dancers will take master classes at the ODC School, attend a professional dance concert, and enjoy some sightseeing. The tour is Wednesday, Oct. 19 – Saturday, Oct. 22, and is encouraged, but not required.
Estimated tour cost is $1,500. Additional details will be available soon.
